Lobbyist CEOs and Corporate Innovation: Political Expertise as a Complement or Substitute
Abstract: This paper examines how CEOs with lobbying experience impact corporate innovation, climate strategies, and firm performance. I find that political capital substitutes for innovation in non-high-tech industries, resulting in fewer patents and reduced climate engagement. Conversely, in high-tech sectors, political expertise complements growth, driving higher R&D investment, more green patents, and higher-value innovation, alongside overall improved operational efficiency.
